Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55

Fujifilm has just introduced the Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55. This announcement has stirred excitement across the filmmaking world, and here’s why.

A Camera Built for Cinema Storytelling

The Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55 is not a simple update. It is a professional cinema camera designed with a digital large-format sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9 mm. With a diagonal of 55 mm, it is about 1.7 times larger than a traditional 35 mm sensor. This larger surface allows cinematographers to capture incredible detail, depth, and texture—features highly valued in cinema production.

Sharing its architecture with the GFX 100 II but optimized for video, the GFX ETERNA 55 reduces rolling shutter with a fast 15 ms readout in 4K. This is especially useful when filming fast-moving scenes or handheld shots.

Technical Innovations That Stand Out

One of the most impressive aspects of this camera is its innovation. Fujifilm has included a world-first electronic variable ND filter for large-format sensors, giving filmmakers precise light control from ND0.6 to ND2.1. The dual base ISO (800 and 3200) helps adapt to different lighting conditions, while a new optical low-pass filter reduces moiré and false colors when shooting complex textures.

Filmmakers will also appreciate the wide range of formats supported: open gate 4:3, 8K DCI up to 30p, Super 35, anamorphic, and more. Internal recording options include Apple ProRes, H.265, and H.264, all at 10-bit 4:2:2, with external RAW support via HDMI.

Designed for Professionals, Accessible to Small Crews

Despite its advanced features, the GFX ETERNA 55 weighs about 2 kg, making it manageable for smaller crews or solo operators. Dual side monitors, a detachable 5-inch external LCD with 2000 nits brightness, and ergonomic controls make the shooting experience intuitive and adaptable.

Battery management and dual card slots (CFExpress and SD) ensure flexibility in demanding shoots.

A New Chapter for Cinema Cameras

The Fujifilm GFX ETERNA 55 will officially launch in October, with a starting price of $16,500 (body only). While this is an investment, it aims to deliver the highest image quality at a cost far lower than many traditional cinema systems.
