Created in 2013, the Pierre Angénieux Tribute is an official part of the Cannes Film Festival every year. This tribute honors cinematographers, recognizing their unique talent and essential role in cinematography. The winner is honored at a ceremony where they receive a specially engraved Angénieux lens.
This year, the tribute goes to acclaimed cinematographer Dion Beebe (ACS, ASC), honored at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Born in Australia and raised in South Africa, Beebe’s career spans decades, continents and genres. From early inspirations like Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers to collaborations with directors like Rob Marshall and Michael Mann. Beebe represents the perfect combination of innovation, legacy and promising future.
His filmography includes the Oscar-winning Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago, Collateral and most recently, The Little Mermaid (2023). Beebe is also considered a pioneer in digital cinematography, pushing boundaries with projects like Miami Vice using the Thomson Viper FilmStream camera.
On May 22, Beebe will host a special Masterclass moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s Jordan Mintzer. The main tribute ceremony will follow on May 23, at the Palais des Festivals.
Beebe’s distinctive style has often been realized through Angénieux lenses, used in films such as Mary Poppins Returns, Into the Woods, Gemini Man and many more. His approach, free from rigid rules and full of curiosity, makes Angénieux a natural partner in his storytelling journey.
As part of its commitment to the future of cinematography, Angénieux also presents the Special Encouragement Award, which in 2025 goes to Eunsoo Cho, a rising cinematographer from South Korea. A graduate of both K-ARTS and USC, Cho has already received international acclaim for her cross-cultural work, including The Law of Action and Reaction, which earned her a Kodak Student Award.
Angénieux will support Cho’s next project with professional technology, continuing a legacy of nurturing talents like Kadri Koop, Haya Khairat, Evelin van Rei and others.
This year’s tribute carries even deeper meaning as Angénieux celebrates its 90th anniversary, nine decades of innovation, craftsmanship and collaboration with the world’s top cinematographers.
