A new generation of anamorphic lenses has arrived, but what makes these lenses different from everything we have seen before? The answer is not just in the image they create. It is also in the way they can change how cinema crews work on set. Let's take a closer look at the new Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic lenses.
The Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic series is ZEISS’s latest family of full-frame 2x anamorphic lenses designed for professional cinema production. The lineup includes seven focal lengths ranging from 35mm to 200mm.
These lenses combine the classic anamorphic look filmmakers love with a modern design focused on efficiency, precision, and integration with today's cinema workflows.
One of the main reasons cinematographers choose anamorphic lenses is their unique visual style. The Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic lenses use a true 2x anamorphic squeeze, creating:
Pronounced oval bokeh
A wider and more immersive sense of space
Greater perceived depth
A cinematic look that feels different from spherical lenses
By compressing the image horizontally and expanding it during post-production, these lenses produce the signature anamorphic aesthetic seen in many feature films.

Unlike lenses that impose a strong visual personality, the Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic series starts with a neutral look.
This allows cinematographers to shape the image using filters, diffusion, grading, and lighting without the lens fighting the creative direction. ZEISS also offers a dedicated look-tuning back element that can introduce softer contrast and a more vintage-inspired rendering while maintaining accurate lens calibration.
One of the biggest innovations of the Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic family is the fully integrated motorized system.
The lenses feature built-in focus and iris motors, eliminating the need for external motors, brackets, and additional cabling. This provides several advantages:
Faster camera setup
Quicker lens changes
Cleaner camera builds
Reduced rigging complexity
Improved balance for handheld, gimbal, drone, and studio use
The lenses are fully compatible with industry-standard lens control systems from ARRI and Preston.
The Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic lenses store calibrated focus and iris data directly inside the lens, creating a single source of accurate metadata. They also support Cooke /i technology, providing frame-accurate information for focus distance, aperture, depth of field, and more.
ZEISS has also equipped the lenses with onboard processing and memory, allowing future firmware updates that could expand compatibility and unlock new features over time.
The series includes seven lenses:
35mm T2.3
40mm T2.3
50mm T2.3
75mm T2.3
100mm T2.3
150mm T2.3
200mm T2.9
All lenses cover full-frame sensors and share a consistent 114mm front diameter, helping crews maintain balance and efficiency when working with professional cinema cameras.
The Zeiss Horizon Anamorphic series represents a significant step forward in cinema lens design. By combining the classic 2x anamorphic look with integrated motors, advanced metadata support, and streamlined operation, ZEISS has created a lens family that focuses not only on image quality but also on improving the entire filmmaking workflow.
