The initial concept behind ALFA lenses originated from ARRI Rental's enduring partnership with cinematographer Greig Fraser ACS, ASC, who also played a pivotal role in the DNA lens program.
Responding to Fraser's request for innovative large-format anamorphic options, ARRI Rental technicians adapted sets of ARRI Master Anamorphic lenses, not only adjusting them to cover the expanded format but also redesigning and detuning them to achieve specific image characteristics.
Further prototyping occurred in collaboration with cinematographer Nikolaus Summerer, another longstanding associate of ARRI Rental.
After extensive research and development, the specifications for a production series of ALFA lenses were established.
The sturdy, purpose-built housings still incorporate some Master Anamorphic glass, accompanied by other custom optical elements and modifications, resulting in an entirely fresh visual aesthetic.
